World of Warcraft movie get’s a release date

wow-movie-lead-in-602x396

It always scares me when Hollywood takes on a franchise as big as World of Warcraft. So many questions run through my head as we hope the film, based on the beloved MMORPG and is played by millions, lives up to the legend it has become today. I’ve only seen one of Duncan Jone’s film, Moon starring Sam Rockwell, and yes…it was great, but would I have giving him the keys to Azeroth without seeing a smidgen of that epic-ness in something he’s done? Nope.

I’m not saying he won’t do justice to this film. One need only to look at him to tell that he’s definitely spent some time on the leveling grounds, but here’s the big question…what can World of Warcraft bring to the table that The Lord of the Rings hasn’t?  Orcs, Trolls, Elves, Monsters, Wizards…haven’t those persona’s been brought to amazing life by the maestro Peter Jackson. I realize that there are a ton of other aspects/races, in World of Warcraft, but let’s be honest, WOW is primarily comprised of the previously mentioned, but perhaps that’s where Duncan will find his niche, by exploring the less obvious.

The reach is wide, as far as fans of WOW are concerned, but the hard part will be getting the women, who’ve watched their significant others, destroy their relationships on WOW…to go, not only that, to spend 12 dollars on a film, based on a game, that she personally, would like to see go away forever. I kinda feel for the women in this situation. One need only look at Pacific Rim to see the effects of too much testosterone. Duncan, if he’s smart, will gear this movie towards the women. There are several story lines, within WOW, that lend themselves to the sensitive, I would pick one of them and roll with it…at least this is what I would do.

Sorry…I meant to tell you about the release date.

Legendary & Universal Pictures have announced a 2015 release date for the upcoming World of Warcraft movie being directed by Duncan Jones (of Moon and Source Code). The movie, titled simply Warcraft, will arrive in theaters on December 18th, 2015 – no other major movies are scheduled for that December yet (however the last two Hobbit movies arrive on that weekend in 2013 and 2014). As we reported previously, casting is now underway (expect more news soon) and shooting begins early 2014. An early PVP sequence was shown at Comic-Con this summer, but specific story details are still unknown. The script is by Charles Leavitt (Blood Diamond, Seventh Son) and Blizzard is intimately involved.

Universal Studios in talks to bring IDW’s Locke and Key to the big screen…finally

Can this amazing comic book get a friggin break? Yep…according to Heat Vision , Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez‘s amazing story of violence and magic is being picked up by Universal Studios with screenwriters/producers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci in place to produce the film.

Whew…I was scared, they were set to write.

Locke & Key tells of three siblings who, after the gruesome murder of their father, move to their ancestral home in Massachusetts. They soon discover the house has magical keys that give the bearers a vast array of powers and abilities. However, a devious creature is also after the keys, forcing the family to make a stand against evil.

Kurtzman and Orci have clearly been campaigning for awhile to see this project to fruition. Back in 2011, they shot a respectable pilot that was directed by Mark Romanek , that unfortunately never saw the light of day. Who knows what companies like Universal Studios are thinking when they scoop up the rights to something we fans hold so dear, but I imagine they work a lot like Scrooge McDuck, in that they just want to own it.  That way they have the luxury of knowing no one else can touch it. Hopefully this isn’t just another trophy and this picture will get made.

Listen to M83′s “Starwaves” from the OBLIVION soundtrack and prepare to be overwhelmed

So many amazing artist have transitioned into composing soundtracks and have done so successfully. Trent Reznor, Danny Elfman, Jonsi, Johnny Greenwood, BECK and Randy Newman just to name a few. All great artist and all clearly capable of pushing themselves to that next level. Anthony Gonzalez  of M83 can now be added to that list, but it isn’t like his music hasn’t been used in a slew of trailers and commercial’s, it’s just that this recent endeavor makes it official. Most of you remember the M83 track “OUTRO” off their “Hurry Up Were Dreaming” album, that was used in The Cloud Atlas  trailer. If that song didn’t help sell that highly complicated film, to people who had no idea what the film was, I don’t know what did. There’s no one I know, that didn’t say they got chills when they saw the trailer for The Cloud Atlas for the first time. It’s a shame too, cause not only was the film a respectable endeavor, but the soundtrack composed by Tom Tykwer, Johnny Klimek, Reinhold Heil is absolutely outstanding and it along with other aspects of the film were completely snubbed by The Academy of Motion Picture Art and Sciences   this year. This really doesn’t surprise me considering this institution was also responsible for snubbing Martin Scorsese for best director of Good Fellas, they also had never given an award to Alfred Hitchcock. Alfred Hitchcock…wtf! So yeah, they suck! But you know what doesn’t suck? This new  M83 track off the OBLIVION OST. Look folks, I know I have been bad mouthing this film, but it’s because I’m not making the connection. I felt too much has already been given away in the trailer, so unless director Joseph Kosinski (Tron Legacy), pulls an amazing M.Knight Shyamalan, people are going to be disappointed. Allow me to make this very clear…I want this film to work. This is just how I’m feeling right now, that being said, I think leaking this little snippet from the OST is moving in the right direction and should snatch in the last few line toter’s before the films releases on April 19, 2013. M83′s Anthony Gonzalez scored Oblivion with Disney XD’s TRON: Uprising composer Joseph Trapanese , the two are being called M83 although Joseph is not a current member.

If you haven’t seen nor heard Tron: Uprising yet…well damn. It’s not just a cartoon people, it’s some serious next level animation. I’ve embedded the soundtrack from Tron Uprising below, compliment’s of Geek Tyrant’s SoundTRAX series on Soundcloud. If these two great musician’s continue to work together, they have a very promising future in the film industry.

Kosinski’s Oblivion (also known as Horizons) stars Tom Cruise as Jack Harper, plus Morgan Freeman, Olga Kurylenko, Zoe Bell, Andrea Riseborough, Melissa Leo and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau.

Living and patrolling the breathtaking skies from thousands of feet above, Jack’s soaring existence is brought crashing down when he rescues a beautiful stranger from a downed spacecraft. Her arrival triggers a chain of events that forces him to question everything he knows and puts the fate of humanity in his hands.

Oblivion opens in theaters and in IMAX 3D on April 19, 2013.
